Memorial Day Facts

Today, whenever a man is buried with military honors anywhere in the United States, the ceremony is concluded by firing three volleys of musketry over the grave, and sounding with the trumpet or bugle "Put out the lights. Go to sleep"...There is something singularly beautiful and appropriate in the music of this wonderful call. Its strains are melancholy, yet full of rest and peace. Its echoes linger in the heart long after its tones have ceased to vibrate in the air."
Here are the words to TAPS:
Verse 1:
Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the lakes,
From the hills,
From the sky,
All is well,
Safely rest,
God is nigh.
Verse 2:
Fading light,
Dims the sight,
And a star,
Gems the sky,
Gleaming bright,
From afar,
Drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Verse 3:
Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.
The 3-volley salute (not to be confused with a 21-gun) is a ceremonial act performed at military and police funerals as part of the drill and ceremony of the Honor Guard. It consists of a rifle party firing blank cartridges into the air three times. The custom originates from the European dynastic wars, where the fighting ceased so the dead and wounded could be removed. Then, three shots were fired into the air to signal that the battle could resume.[1]
A rifle party usually has an odd number of members, from 3 to 7. The firearm used is typically a rifle, but at some police funerals, shotguns or handguns are used. The party usually stands so that the muzzles are pointed over the casket.

The federal government officially declared the holiday "Memorial Day" in 1967 but before that it was originally known as "Decoration Day" going back to 1864. It began as a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in the Civil War and their friends and family "decorated" their graves with flowers.

It has been determined that the crypt at the Tomb of the Unknowns that contained the remains of the Vietnam Unknown will remain empty.) The Tomb of the Unknowns is guarded by the U.S. Army 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) began guarding the Tomb April 6, 1948.

In its first 100 years of existence, over 683,000 Americans lost their lives, with the Civil War accounting for 623,026 of that total (91.2%). Comparatively, in the next 100 years, a further 626,000 Americans died through two World Wars and several more regional conflicts (World War 2 representing 65% of that total). Using this comparison, the Civil War might very well be the most costly war that America has ever fought.

Flags are raised to the top of the staff and then lowered to half-staff at the start of the day. At noon, they are raised back to full-staff before being taken down for the evening.

U.S. Air Force: "On behalf of the President of the United States, the Department of the Air Force, and a grateful nation, we offer this flag for the faithful and dedicated service of (Service Member’s rank and name)."

U.S. Army: "This flag is presented on behalf of a grateful nation and the United States Army as a token of appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service."

U.S. Coast Guard: "On behalf of the President of the United States, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s service to Country and the Coast Guard."

U.S. Marine Corps: "On behalf of the President of the United States, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s service to Country and Corps."

U.S. Navy: "On behalf of the President of the United States and the Chief of Naval Operations, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s service to this Country and a grateful Navy."

There are 13 folds when folding the flag correctly. Each has a meaning. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."

The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation's motto, "In God We Trust"

1595 U.S soldiers have died in "Operation Enduring Freedom" from the years 2001 until 2011. The largest percentage in the year 2010 with 499 deaths.

They are dead; but they live in each Patriot's breast,
And their names are engraven on honor's bright crest.

After an American flag has been used for a Military or Veterans funeral, it should never be flown again or displayed in any other way than in the tri-fold shape in which it was presented to the next of kin. In other words, the folded flag should never be "opened" again.

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, began on March 20, 2003 ending on  September 1, 2010, the name "Operation Iraqi Freedom" would be replaced by "Operation New Dawn". 4454 soldiers have died in Iraq from the years 2003- 2011.

416,800 U.S. Soldiers were killed in World War 2.

More than 300,000 people are buried at Arlington Cemetery.
Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the Iraq and Afghanistan. Pre-Civil War dead were reinterred after 1900.
116,708 U.S. military deaths during World War 1.

58,267 U.S. Soldiers killed during the Vietnam War.
A rifle pointing downwards into the ground is a memorial of a soldier killed in action. Often the rifle is capped by a helmet and perhaps dog tags, and at the bottom, a pair of boots to represent the final march of the last battle - items the soldier has no further need for.

Folding Of the Flag

I am not sure how many of you have seen an actual flag folding ceremony or maybe you seen it at a funeral. It is a very moving ceremony. The precise way in which the flag is folded. The soldiers hands gently touching the flag not to wrinkle it or get it dirty. It is an amazing moving ceremony. Please play the video and as you watch how carefully this flag is held pray for the ones who gave their life for this amazing symbol we have for our wonderful country and remember freedom is not free! When the video finishes please take a moment and send up a pray for the men and women who are still fighting on this very day for your freedom!! Thank you!!!

Whats to come of ME time??

Okay so the excitement of Big Papa coming home is there but right next to it is uhhhh confusion really. I have done things MY way since he has gone. I have my own schedule, I cook for just me and the kds, I clean when the need arises, I wash clothes again when the need arises and I have ME time when the kids go to bed. I either blog online, talk to my friends, browse the internet, play rock band, watch whatever I want to watch, or just simply lay in my bed and write or read... But when he comes home my ME time becomes OUR time. Is it selfish of me to not want to give up ALL of me time? =( I feel selfish.. I should be so glad hes coming home and wanna spend every moment with him. I know I will at first but once things have settled down I wonder where my outlet goes if he is HERE. He doesn't DEMAND my attention but he is my husband.. he deserves nothing less than that. Though he may not say it I'm sure he is wondering the same thing. When not on missions he can come and go as he pleases (staying on his base of course) and he can talk however he wants, and watch movies that aren't necessarily appropriate for children, can hang out with the guys whenever he likes.. and well it wont be like when he comes home. I will no longer be a "single mom" and he will no longer be a "soldier" per say. Its definitely going to be an adjustment period for us. His R&R was fine that was only 2 weeks... we can finaggle schedules around and do what we have to do but when he comes home for good the kids schedules need to stay in tact to maintain my sanity. I know when he comes home he will be on his own schedule and we will have to do some tweaking but in the end, at the end of the day my ME time is OUR time! Im sure I can get him to let me have some ME time but its gonna be so different. Good different but different Today has been a regular day! See previous post! Went outside let the kiddos play!! Hosed them down with the water hose. I tried to make and Apple Rosetta Pie!!! FAIL!!! I guess after two successful desserts one was bound to be a bust. BLEGH! Oh well!! Try again another time! I dont have much else to say.. Update on Big Papa... still waiting on him to get home! LOL! Hes doing well... trying to catch up on rest from being up for a while He sounds good. My heart still flutters everytime my phone rings and I see that weird REALLY long number from "Afghanistan" show up! Big Papa picked on me on his R&R and I am going to have to try and cut back but I had a 50x limit where I would have to ask him at least 50 times a day if he was ok.. I didnt want him to be uncomfortable in any situation. There were a few things that seemed a bit much, just hard to concentrate on. With a big family like ours that like to talk and talk about a hundred different things, and have 4 or 5 conversations with about 10 other people that would confuse someone who is not part of this family! LOL! In all honesty I was worried about him being overwhelmed, even with just the kids but he did AMAZING! Jumped right into "daddy" mode and hit the ground running. I am so proud of my husband. I have no idea the things he has done or seen and Im not sure I want to know but I do know that he is a wonderful amazing husband and father and I am so blessed to have him in my life! Ok well anyways! Enough about that. Im done for the night gonna throw in a movie and MAYBE fold some clothes! =P Hope everyone has a wonderful night!

Its only TUESDAY!! *Sigh*

[[[For your listening pleasure an annoying throwback song that just fits my bubbly mood today! HEHE!]]]
Wow its only Tuesday!!! Thats CRAZY!! I feel like it should be Thursday or something. Maybe today has just been a long and crazy day! I took the kiddos outside before dinner hoping it would wear them out and sure enough they were even more hyper than normal when I brought them in.. I wonder if I turn the air off and make it really hot in the house that the heat will wear them down. Got some CUUUTE pics of the kiddies playing outside too! =) I gotta admit as crazy as they drive me they sure are gorgeous babies! I definitely lucked out with them on the looks department... must where they lack in sanity!! LOL! Ive done two Boohoo/Hooahs and I noticed both of my Hooahs are Big Papa coming home!! Is it awful that that is the BIGGEST thing that excited me that gets me through the week?? I feel guilty when I have so much more to be excited about. Like cookout monday with hopefully some family and friends... or maybe just my parents and kids! Someone is better than no one I suppose. Also my trip to Florida coming up to see my brother, sister and nephew! If things go as planned headed to the beach with a fellow Army Wife and her babies! I cant wait!! SEEE!! So much going on but all I can think about is about hubs coming home soon! How selfish is that! Again nothing big happened today other than I got through another day! LOL! And Im trying really really hard to be a bigger person. Some things have struck me as kinda shady and instead of being confrontational , antagonistic and a flat out b*tch Im trying to let it go. Not cower down to that persons level, just wooosah, breathe in breathe out and let it go as a friend says! (YESSSS I am talking about YOU)! Facebook has still been quiet. Im loving it. Though I do miss having a more variety of FB statuses to read but this is stress/drama free. My mom has been at my brothers.. I miss her... not used to HER being away and not me. When she comes home shes gonna try and take the two big kids swimming because Buttercup has a cast on and well.. she refuses to wear a bag over it so it doesnt get wet.. makes for exciting/difficult baths.  Anyways.. thats pretty much all thats been going on here.. still working on that motivation thing but at least I got the kids outside into the heat. =) Hope everyone had a happy Tuesday!

Tweetering Again!

Okay so I am back on Twitter with a different Name! SoldierSweetPea FOLLOW ME! *Much Love*

Counting them Down!

Hello my fabulous readers:
So as time goes by and I'm passing time until my husband comes home I am trying to do so many things but yet they aren't getting done. I cannot for the life of me seem to get motivated to get my house in order, get back to working out and over all just get up and get dressed. I manage to drag my butt to get a shower because the least I can do is have me and the kiddos smell good! The end of this deployment is swiftly approaching and well... I have so much to do and now it seems so little time to do it in! I am however one of those people who tend to wait until the last minute to get things done! Yeah LAZY! Its awful. Its been a typical day for me doing typical things. Just making it through the day. I got some shots of the kids playing and my fav. pastime nowadays. It helps me get through the days ya know. I haven't written anything since the death of Bin Laden. I have many thoughts about that but the one that comes to mind is people are crazy. People are shouting in the streets, having parties, and dancing around like we have achieved something great. HAH! Sure we have avenged the death of those lost in 9/11. Sadly enough, he will be replaced and someone else will come along and become the new "Bin Laden". Probably someone younger, less tactful, careless and fearless. Im sure it wont be good. The thought that comes to my mind is oh my goodness the soldiers deployed now. They are in a country full of people who do not want us there, people who hate American and we have just celebrated the successful death of their leader. Do they not think of the repercussions it may possibly have on our soldiers? The anger that is going to fill the hearts of his followers. When you have so many crazies under the guidance of one man and that guidance is gone, then what? You have a bunch of crazies doing their own thing trying to avenge the death of their leader. Sigh, Im not really sure where my opinion is on that. Its a bittersweet moment for American soldiers I suppose. Obama.... well.. people are entitled to their own opinion but MY opinion is hes an IDIOT! Going to the Israeli Prime Minister to "suggest" as a peace offering to extend Palestinian borders to where they were before... WHATEVER!! As a Christian I knew this was coming in some way shape or form. The Lord knows what he is doing and why people are allowed to take positions on such as Obama and make decisions. God does not MAKE things happen but he does ALLOW certain things to happen so that his revelations be full filled. Okay so I have rambled on enough about things! All in all today was a good day! Im still here and Im still somewhat sane! YAY! Cudos to me for still being somewhat "normal"! Hope everyone has had a great day.

Watch the video it says it all!! Scroll down to the bottom of the page and turn the volume down on the music before you watch!! Enjoy!
